Angelica, Allen and I will be attending two of the three day Family Literacy Conference in San Diego on Sunday March 25 and Monday March 26th. Vivian arranged for us to take a city vehicle and we'll be heading out EARLY Sunday morning to make it there by 8am. It looks like there are a lot of interesting workshops so we met and coordinated who would attend which workshop.

ReplyDeleteWhat a day. Startted off the day by attending a panel on Dolly Parton's Imagination library. Alas Dolly did not shoe but a representative of Imagination Library did and talked about the program. The program seemed interesting and a good service I just don't see how it would be implemented via a public library. The way the program works is that for a 25 dollar contribution children between the ages of 0-5 are mailed a carefully selected book every month to help them build up their own personal library. I think it's a great idea but wonder about the practicality and expense of running it through a public library as opposed to a small classroom
ReplyDeleteAfter the Dolly panel I wandered the exhibitors floor for awhile which I found disappointing compared to the exhibitors floors at CLA and ALA. While there were some major vendors like Scholastic I felt to much space was taken with vendors selling purses and jewelry.
After lunch I attended a Reading Treasure panel. Reading Treasures are bags delivered to parents which include newsletters, books, tips and instructional guides to help them work with their children at home with basic literacy skills. This is something that could easily be adapted for parents in B2B and would be a great addition. Perhaps it could be something we could put together and hand out at our monthly family nights.
The next panel I attended also focused on parents being involved in promoting literacy in the home. The two major ideas I took away from this panel were to do a survey of students and see what their reading interests lie and pass that along to the parents (and in the case of B2B also share with the child's tutor). The other idea was to familiarize parents with the CAR strategy when reading with their child at home. The CAR strategy is where a parent Comments and waits for the child's response to a text Asks questions related to the text being read and then Responds to the child's answer.
The final panel of the day was keynote speaker Wes More who gave an inspirational and moving speech. I'll end this post with what I thought was the quote of the day from his address "we are not the product of our environment...we are the product of our own expectations"
